Finnair develops its route network and stops flying to unprofitable routes to Kajaani, Kiev and Stuttgart. Finnair stops its service to Kajaani and Stuttgart on March 1, and to Kiev on March 11.

Customers may now pay the excess baggage fee for an extra bag on scheduled flights in advance through a travel agency in Finland using the Amadeus reservations system. The normal baggage allowance, depending or travel class, is 1 or 2 bags weighing at most 23 kg/bag. The fee for an extra bag can now be paid through the travel agency at the time of reservation.

As of January 2, 2012, tax-free liquid goods of more than 100 ml purchased at an airport outside the EU or onboard a non-EU flight may be brought into the passenger cabin of a connecting flight at Helsinki Airport. The alleviation of the regulations concerning liquids will be conducted on a trial bases at Helsinki Airport until March 16, 2012, during which time the trial will be reviewed.

Due to the renewal of the pre-seating system, advance seat reservation is not possible for some passengers with a flight departure after March 15, 2012. Starting February 16, 2012, seats may again be reserved for all customers through the travel agency reservation systems and the Finnair website.

Finnair and Finavia have chosen seven Quality Hunters, who will observe flight operations and service with the aim of improving customers’ travel experience. From October 20th, for a period of six weeks, this group of Quality Hunters will travel on Finnair flights from Helsinki to various destinations in Europe, Asia and the United States. An eighth Quality Hunter will be chosen from members of the public who participated in the discussion.

The partially Finnair-owned partner airline Flybe Nordic will begin operating routes formerly operated by Finncomm Airlines and also flights on several routes in the neighbouring countries. The airline code for Flybe is BE.

Finnair will operate scheduled flight between Helsinki and Dubai during the winter starting from October 7, 2011 until March 23, 2012. The route is operated with Boeing 757 aircraft, which offers normal Economy Class service, but no separate Business Class.

The Angry Birds are currently preparing for their longest flight. Finnair will fly the world-famous Angry Birds, developed by the Finnish company Rovio, to Singapore on September 20. During the flight, fans of the mobile device game will compete in the Angry Birds Asian Challenge at an altitude of 10 kilometres.

Finnair is participating in Pink Ribbon work to promote breast cancer research and improve the provision of advice and information for patients and their relatives. The objective is to collect funds for the Pink Ribbon Fund and to increase awareness of breast cancer. Finnair’s customers will also be able to participate in this work.

Finnair is able to offer a good new connection to Skellefteå in northern Sweden, as its partner Finncomm Airlines will begin direct flights between Kokkola-Pietarsaari in Finland and Skellefteå in Sweden on August 1, 2011. It's been nine years since flights were last operated from Kokkola-Pietarsaari to Sweden.
