Planning your trip when flying with a pet

  • If you intend to fly with a pet, you should make a reservation for the pet at the same time as your own reservation, whether you do this through your travel agent or via Finnair customer care. Each flight has a pet quota – we will let you know if there is room on the flight for your pet when you make your reservation.
  • You must give us the dimensions of the pet transportation container as well as the total weight of the container and pet when you make the reservation.
  • When transporting pets, country specific restrictions regarding animal welfare must be taken into consideration. For example, in Finland, puppies younger than eight weeks may not be transported by air. For country specific regulations concerning documentation requirements and animal age restrictions, please contact the relevant authorities in your destination country.
  • According to a directive issued by the European Union, a dog, cat or ferret carried by a passenger on a flight within the EU must be identifiable by a microchip or a clearly readable tattoo. In addition, the pet must be accompanied by a certificate (known as a pet passport), which bears its rabies vaccination status, along with other health information. Further information is available on Evira’s website (the Finnish Food Safety Authority).
  • If you are moving to a country outside the European Union with a pet, please check the requirements for re-entry before your journey.
  • Only one pet carrier per passenger is permitted.
  • The animal must remain fully in its container for the entire duration of the flight.
  • If you are transporting a dog or cat in the cabin, we recommend that you carry it in a soft bag, as it will fit more easily under the seat in front. All pet transportation bags must have a solid bottom and be suitable for animal transport. Rodents must always be transported in a hard carrier. Animals carried on flights from London to Helsinki may only be transported in a hard carrier.
  • You may not carry a pet in the cabin if you are travelling in Business Class on an intercontinental flight, as there is no room under the reclining seats.
  • If you are allergic to animals, please see Passengers allergic to animals.
