Finnair will start flying to Chicago next summer, from 13 June to 17 October 2015. Flights from Helsinki will be operated on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Chicago is the largest city in the American Midwest and a global hub for business, leisure and the arts. Chicago is a hub for American Airlines, which allows Finnair’s customers quick codeshare connections to destinations throughout the United States, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Due to opening the Chicago route, Finnair's seasonal summer service to Hanoi will be discontinued. Finnair's previously announced new summer destinations in 2015 include Athens, Dublin, Malta and Split.
Finnair will offer scheduled flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Eilat, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Madeira in winter season 2015–2016.
Next winter season Finnair will offer new scheduled flights to popular holiday destinations that have previously been served with flights chartered by tour operators. The new destinations are Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Eilat in Israel, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands and Madeira in Portugal.
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has awarded Finnair a position on The A List: The CDP Climate Performance Leadership Index 2014, for actions to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the business risks of climate change.
The index presents 187 listed companies identified as demonstrating a superior approach to climate change mitigation. Finnair is the only airline awarded an A grade for its climate performance, earning a position on this global ranking of corporate efforts to mitigate climate change.
Finnair is on track to reduce per-seat CO2 emissions by 24 percent between 2009 and 2017. The airline’s actions to reach this target and improve its environmental performance include:

The design collaboration between Marimekko and Finnair takes a new step as a Finnair Airbus 330 will soon feature a previously unseen blue colorway of Marimekko’s classic Unikko (“poppy”) print. The plane will fly from Finnair’s Helsinki hub to the airline’s long-haul destinations starting from the end of 2014, joining a sister aircraft painted in a different Unikko colorway in 2012.
“During this year we have been celebrating the fifty years of our most iconic pattern Unikko all over the world, reminding people of its story of courage and faith in oneself. We are very excited to continue the celebrations and our design partnership together with Finnair with the new Anniversary Unikko that will fly on the sides of Finnair’s Airbus 330, delighting people around the world,” says Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, Marimekko’s COO.
The design collaboration between Marimekko and Finnair began in 2012 and Marimekko for Finnair textiles and tableware were brought to all of the Finnish airline’s aircraft in 2013. The collection was designed according to the airline’s needs by Marimekko designer Sami Ruotsalainen, in original Marimekko patterns by Maija Isola. The blue, green and grey colours and the classic prints used in the collection tell the story of Finnish nature and recall the perspective of looking out from an aircraft window, flying high above the landscape.
Finnair, UNICEF and Amadeus have joined forces to benefit the world’s most unprivileged children.
Finnair, the United Nations children’s organization UNICEF and Amadeus, a leading technology partner for the global travel industry, have joined forces to benefit the world’s most unprivileged children. Passengers now have the opportunity to make a donation to UNICEF and support education for Asian children when booking their flights on the Finnair website. The option will become available as of 27 October 2014 and donations will be possible in sums of one, five or ten euros.
Donated sums are directed to UNICEF’s Schools for Asia campaign, which supports education for the most vulnerable children in 11 Asian countries.
"We hope that passengers will back our aim of providing a better future for many Asian children,” says Pekka Vauramo, CEO of Finnair. "Even very small sums can make a big difference, and every donation is significant to those who benefit.”
Finnair opens new summer route to Split, operated Tuesdays and Saturdays from 5 May to 3 October 2015.
Finnair is opening a new route to the Croatian city of Split, operated Tuesdays and Saturdays from 5 May to 3 October 2015. Scheduled service to the popular gateway to the Dalmatian coast will be flown with Airbus A320 aircraft and timed for optimal connections with Finnair’s domestic, Scandinavian and Asian destinations.
Elsewhere in Croatia, Finnair flies daily in summer to historic Dubrovnik, 250 kilometres south of Split and also on the Dalmatian coast.
Earlier this year Finnair announced new European destinations Dublin, Athens and Malta, as well as new scheduled services to Chania, Heraklion, Kos and Rhodes in Greece; Catania and Naples in Italy; Marmaris in Turkey; Mallorca in Spain; Paphos in Cyprus and Innsbruck in Austria.
Finnair and Finnish railway operator VR are cooperating to offer combined air-and-rail tickets between St. Petersburg and international destinations connecting via Helsinki.
Combined air-and-rail tickets will enable passengers flying throughout Finnair’s network in Europe, Asia and North America to connect to and from St. Petersburg on a high-speed Allegro train. Finnair begins selling the combined tickets on 1 October 2014, and the first Allegro train connection with AY code will be on 1 December 2014.
The train ride between Helsinki’s Central Railway Station and St. Petersburg’s Finland Station takes 3 hours and 36 minutes. Passport and customs procedures are carried out on board the train while en route, saving customers’ time and allowing for a smooth passenger experience. The ticket also allows stopovers in Helsinki, enabling customers with business in both cities to make a single booking while also giving leisure travellers the opportunity to take time to explore the Finnish capital region.

For the second year running Finnair has been named Best European Airline at the annual TTG Travel Awards, a prestigious occasion in the Asia-Pacific travel industry that recognises organisations raising the bar of excellence in travel and tourism in the region.
Punctuality, service upgrades and smooth transfer reliability were all factors in favour of Finnair being given the honour by readers – industry professionals – of the publications TTG Asia, TTG China, TTG India, TTGmice, TTGassociations, TTG-BTmice China and TTG Asia Luxury.

Finnair is launching cooperation with the leading Finnish restaurants Nokka, G.W. Sundmans, Savoy and Fishmarket. Their chefs, Matti Jämsén from G.W. Sundmans, Ari Ruoho from Nokka and Kari Aihinen from Savoy, have designed signature menus that will be available in Business Class on long-haul flights from Helsinki from the end of January 2015.
The cornerstones of the signature menus are the best seasonal ingredients and experimentation with bold flavour combinations. The menus will be rotated at approximately three-month intervals.
The cooperation between Finnair and Royal Restaurants will also be visible on other Finnair flights. In Economy Class on long-haul routes, Finnair will offer Finnish home meals designed by the chefs. The signature menus have also influenced the starters and main courses of Business Class meals on European routes.
Finnair will carry startup businesses from around the world to the international Slush conference held in Helsinki on 18–19 November.
Finnair is launching a collaboration with Slush, the Finland-based nexus for startups, tech talent, international investors, executives and media. Finnair is carrying participants to Helsinki for the organisation's annual flagship conference as well as helping Slush embark on a world tour to several Asian destinations.
The forthcoming two-day Slush conference on 18–19 November at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors from around 70 countries. The promotion of international business relationships between Europe and Asia is a common interest for both Finnair and Slush, who see an opportunity for Finland to thrive as a gateway between East and West where ideas, talent and capital can meet and innovation flourish.
Finnair will fly Helsinki-based Jokerit to their season 2014–2015 KHL guest matches as part of their new collaboration.
Finnair has teamed up with Jokerit, a Helsinki-based hockey team playing their first season in the international KHL league. As part of the collaboration, Finnair will fly Jokerit to all of their season 2014–2015 guest matches.
Jokerit and Finnair’s cooperation is off to a flying start with the team’s season continuing this and next week with their first guest tour. During nine days Jokerit will play four games against teams from the East conference.
Finnair will fly the team to their KHL matches on private charter flights.
Next summer we will add new seasonal services to Dublin, Athens and Malta. The service to Dublin begins on 30 March, to Malta on 2 April and to Athens on 5 April. Flights to all three destinations will be operated until late October with timetables designed for optimal connections with Finnair's network of Asian destinations.
The Dublin (DUB) route will be served six times a week, on every weekday except for Tuesdays, with 100-seat Embraer 190 aircraft operated on behalf of Finnair by Flybe Finland.
Flights to Malta International Airport (MLA) near the Maltese capital Valletta are operated two times a week – Mondays and Thursdays – with Airbus A321 Sharklet aircraft. Athens (ATH) is also served twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, with Airbus A319s or A320s.
"With these new destinations we are responding to growing demand, particularly from Asia, so timetables for each of these new routes are tailored for the best possible connection to Finnair's Asian flights," says Petri Vuori, Finnair's VP Global Sales. "At the same time of course our Finnish and Baltic Rim passengers will also be able to enjoy what these fascinating destinations have to offer."
Finnair is launching a suite of product upgrades and developing a mobile application as part of a larger drive to comprehensively renew the customer experience both on the ground and in the air.
On long-haul flights, product upgrades coming in the fall include the Economy Comfort package, a new offering in the front of the Economy Class cabin featuring at least four inches of extra legroom, comfy headrests, high-quality headphones and personal amenity kits. The Economy Class meal service is also being updated with an additional complimentary mid-flight snack on day-time flights, a new wine selection and complimentary sparkling wine.
Business Class will also soon include a new amenity kit with high-quality brand products. Throughout both Business and Economy, the inflight entertainment system is being redesigned with a fresher, more intuitive look and feel and a greater selection of movies, TV shows, newspapers, magazines and books.
On short-haul flights in Economy Class, Finnair will introduce Sky Bistro, a wider mix-and-match selection of seasonal, high-quality foods and beverages combining the best tastes of Europe and Asia. Meals can be tailored in advance at Finnair.com or bought on board during the flight.
Sky Bistro, which will be available on nearly all European flights, replaces the complimentary cold snack service that has been offered on some European flights lasting over two hours. On all flights in all classes, coffee and tea remain complimentary – as does Finnair’s signature refreshment, blueberry juice. In Business Class, meals remain inclusive in the ticket price.
Finnair’s mobile application, rolling out initially for Apple iOS devices in the fall and arriving on other mobile platforms later, is designed to be the customer’s companion throughout the journey, providing personalised, up-to-the-minute flight information and storing the customer’s mobile boarding passes. The app can be used to check in, select seats, purchase upgrades, receive relevant offers and check Finnair Plus point status.
“During the past year we have carried out detailed surveys of nearly 8,000 customers from our key markets in both Europe and Asia,” says Jarkko Konttinen, Finnair’s VP Marketing and Product Development. “With these product updates in tune with customer expectations and desires, we can support our core goal of growing Asian revenue and becoming a preferred airline in travel between Asia and Europe.”
Each of these product renewals will come online this autumn. Other product developments announced previously include new seats in Business Class that convert to fully flat beds on almost all long-haul aircraft, a sauna and new shower suites at the Finnair Lounge at Helsinki Airport, and the new Premium Lounge, an exclusive lounge annex for Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum members and other oneworld top tier customers only.
As the European launch customer of the next-generation Airbus A350 XWB (extra wide body) aircraft, Finnair has completed the cabin design of its new flagship long-haul product due to enter service next year. Created by the top Helsinki design firm dSign Vertti Kivi & Co, also the designer of Finnair’s new Premium Lounge at Helsinki Airport, the A350’s bright and spacious cabin features large panoramic view windows and comfortable seating arrangements both in Economy and Business Class. Gradual changes in the dynamic ambient LED lighting will ease customers into a relaxing flight experience and help create a calming and fresh atmosphere. All Finnair A350s will also be equipped with Wi-Fi for greater passenger enjoyment and connectivity.
“We have worked hard to create a special customer experience onboard the new A350 XWB aircraft and are proud to bring Finnish design to Finnair’s passengers,” says designer Vertti Kivi. “Our Space Alive concept means dynamic lighting, colours and moods to suit the time of day, destination or season. For example, when descending in the East the aircraft can be awash in warm orange tones, or surface interiors may glow in fresh blue hues when arriving in Helsinki.”
The Airbus A350 features an advanced pure air filtration system that changes the air in the cabin every two to three minutes. Draft-free air management, adjustable multiple temperature zones and a lower cabin pressure will also enhance the well-being of passengers and crew.
The 297-seat configuration includes 46 seats in Business Class in a 1+2+1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access to all Business Class passengers. The Zodiac Cirrus III seats convert to fully flat beds, while a 16-inch touch-screen inflight entertainment system comes programmed with films, TV shows, music and other digital content on demand in numerous languages. Seats in Business Class also come equipped with AC and USB power outlets.
The Economy Class cabin features comfortable Zodiac Z300 slim-line seats with a 31-inch seat pitch in a 3+3+3 layout. At the front of the Economy Class cabin there are 43 Economy Comfort seats with comfier headrests, high-quality headphones and four extra inches of legroom. All Economy Class seats include an 11-inch touch screen inflight entertainment system and a USB power outlet.
“Since Finnair’s founding in 1923, we have had a long history of operations using the most advanced aircraft available,” says Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo. “As the first European operator of the A350 we are proud to carry forward this tradition on behalf of our passengers, whose safety and comfort remain our first priority.”
Finnair plans to begin operating its first A350s in the second half of next year, initially serving Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing, with Hong Kong and Singapore A350 service to be added in 2016. Finnair has 11 firm orders and 8 options for A350 aircraft, which will form the backbone of the company’s long-haul fleet and drive expansion plans.
The eco-smart design of the A350 also brings more than 25 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and operating cost over the previous generation of aircraft in its class, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of Finnair and its passengers.
Finnair announces ten new scheduled routes to popular destinations for summer 2015 in cooperation with Suntours and other tour operators. Finnair and Suntours will work closely together to ensure the best combination of travel packages and flight-only reservations to every destination. Flight-only purchases can be made either via Finnair’s website or through the travel agencies.
The new scheduled routes are operated up to six
times a week to:
Paphos, Cyprus starting 31 March;
Palma de Mallorca, Spain starting 11 April;
Dalaman, Turkey starting 12 April 2015;
Heraklion, Crete (Greece) starting 17 April;
Chania, Crete (Greece) starting 18 April;
Rhodes, Greece starting 19 April;
Catania, Sicily (Italy) starting 6 May;
Kos, Greece starting 9 May;
Naples, Italy starting 28 May;
Innsbruck, Austria starting 14 June.
The routes will give Finnair and Suntours customers better and more frequent flight options to the most popular sun destinations. To match customer preferences Finnair will fly less often to Antalya in Turkey and will instead add more flights to Alanya (Gazipasa) in summer 2015. Flights to all above-mentioned destinations can already be booked on Finnair’s website.
Finnair has been named Northern Europe’s Best Airline at the World Airline Awards, repeating the honour for the fifth straight time since 2010. The awards, organised by Skytrax and held this year at the Farnborough Air Show, are based on an independent survey of some 18 million travellers from more than 160 countries, and are considered the most prestigious and respected awards in the airline industry. The oneworld alliance has also been named the World’s Best Airline Alliance for the second year running.
“We recognise how tough the competition can be, not only in our home region but in the numerous Asian markets we serve as well,” says Gregory Kaldahl, Finnair’s SVP Resource Management, who was on hand at Farnborough to collect the award. “It is very gratifying to receive this kind of recognition for our employees’ commitment to the needs of customers and the continued development of our product both on the ground and in the air.”
Finnair has nearly completed its program, begun late last year, to equip its long-haul fleet with seats that convert to fully flat beds in Business Class on nine routes. Inflight entertainment has also recently been upgraded for passengers in both classes, and custom Marimekko for Finnair tableware, textiles and other amenities are provided in both cabins. New lounge services opening in August at Helsinki Airport as well as additions to Finnair’s long-haul fleet in 2015 will take passenger comfort and environmental performance to the next level.
Finnair remains the only airline in the Nordic countries with a four-star Skytrax rating.
This summer we’ll start operating direct scheduled flights to Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Kazan in Russia.
Flights to Nizhny Novgorod (airport code GOJ) begin 25 July, while flights to Samara (KUF) start on 7 August and to Kazan (KZN) on 18 August. The flights will be operated by Flybe Finland three times a week with Embraer E90 aircraft.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the biggest cities in Russia and a growing IT hub. Samara is an industrial hub of southern Russia with 1.1 million inhabitants. Kazan is the multi-ethnical capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and the world’s centre of the Tatar Muslim culture.
In addition to these new destinations we also fly twice a day to St. Petersburg, 9 times a week to Moscow (Sheremetyevo) and four times a week to Yekaterinburg. Together with our oneworld partner S7 Airlines we also offer codeshare connections to Moscow (Domodedovo) and onward to Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Ufa and Yekaterinburg.
Skytrax, an international research company for the air transport industry, has renewed Finnair’s 4-star rating based on a product audit conducted as part of the World Airline Star Rating program. A comprehensive audit was carried out on 18 flights in February, during which the auditors carefully examined hundreds of elements of the service and product at airports and onboard. Since 2009 Finnair has been the only Nordic airline with a 4-star Skytrax rating. The 4-star airline rating is presently awarded to 35 airlines around the world.

As we strive to stay ahead amidst very tough competition, we will continue with our determined work to develop and improve customer service and exceed this demanding standard.”
Together with Finavia, Finnair will install 10 self-service bag drop units for Finnair customers in the departure hall of Terminal 2 at Helsinki Airport by the end of May. Self-service bag drop units will also be introduced at Oulu and Turku airports later this year.
The self-service bag drop units allow customers to tag and drop their checked baggage without assistance, provided that they have checked in online or at a self-service check-in kiosk. The baggage tag is printed at the self-service check-in kiosk. The bag is then placed on the belt at the self-service bag drop unit, where the passenger scans the bag tag using a hand held scanner. The bag is then ready to go.
“Those of our customers who require assistance will still receive personal service from our baggage drop counters and departure hall personnel. Normal bag drop counters will remain in use alongside the self-service bag drop units,” adds Johanna Bagge, Director of Helsinki Airport Customer Service.
The impressive new ferris wheel that has risen above the Helsinki shore skyline has been named Finnair Sky Wheel. The 40-meter ferris wheel, built upon the Katajanokka pier in time for the 1st of May, is equipped with 30 air-conditioned blue and white gondolas that will take passengers for a ride every day from noon to midnight. Passengers can also choose to ride the Finnair Sky Wheel in a VIP-gondola with glass floors and leather seating. The €195 price includes Veuve Clicquot champagne.
”Finnair is happy to be first in being a part of giving thousands of passengers the chance to experience a scenic tour above the rooftops of Helsinki. The ferris wheel is a prominent and internationally notable Helsinki landmark that includes an aviation element. This is why we as an airline wish to be seen with it,” says Finnair’s marketing director Jarkko Konttinen.
On 8 June Finnair will organise an event where all Finnair Plus members may ride the ferris wheel for free between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Finnair Plus members will also receive a 25% discount on the entry fee at all other times (does not apply to the VIP-gondola), leaving the cost of the ticket at €9 (normally €12).
From 9 April 2014 onward passengers on Finnair flights are allowed to use handheld devices, such as smartphones, tablets and e-readers, also during take-offs and landings as long as the devices are kept in flight mode. The approval came from the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).
Passengers may still be asked to switch off their devices if the visibility conditions are low during landing. Laptop computers are not considered handheld devices, and must always be switched off and stored properly during take-off and landing.
“Since the European Aviation Safety Agency recently eased its regulations concerning the operation of portable electronic devices, we have sought to apply these regulations to policies on board Finnair flights. Now with the necessary approvals in place, we are able to do so,” says Antti Aukia, Finnair’s VP Safety and Quality Management.
