For safety and security reasons, certain items are not allowed on board as carry-on baggage, and some items are not permitted aboard the aircraft even as checked baggage. Also, a prior approval is often needed from the airline. The information on this page applies to all Finnair flights – if your trip includes flights operated by other airlines, please see their baggage regulations.

Below is a list of some common items and packing instructions:


You can take as carry-on baggage:

  • Liquids in containers of max. 100 ml packed in a single, transparent, re-sealable 1-litre plastic bag.
  • Medicines and special dietary products e.g. baby food, vital for the trip. You may be asked for proof of authenticity.
  • Duty-free goods in a sealed security bag. The item and the receipt must remain sealed inside the security bag provided at the time of purchase.

Present your liquids separately from other carry-on baggage for screening at the airport security check.

Matches and cigarette lighters

  • May be transported in the pocket, not as checked or carry-on baggage
  • Only one small packet of matches or one cigarette lighter permitted
  • Lighter fuel and lighter refills are not permitted

Electronic cigarettes

  • May be transported as carry-on baggage
  • Not permitted to be used during the flight


  • May be transported as checked baggage
  • Max. size of one bottle is 0,5 kg or 0,5 l
  • Total acceptable amount of aerosol products per passenger is 2 kg or 2 l (includes perfumes, colognes, medicines containing alcohol, etc.)
  • The bottle must be protected by a cap to prevent involuntary release of the contents

Camping stoves and fuel containers

  • May be transported as checked baggage
  • The fuel tank of the camping stove and/or fuel container must be completely drained of all liquid fuel
  • Gas containers are forbidden, full or empty
  • Prior approval from Finnair is needed

Avalanche rescue backpack

  • May be transported as checked or carry-on baggage
  • Pyrotechnic trigger mechanism may contain less than 200 mg of Div. 1.4S explosives
  • Must be packed in a way that it cannot accidentally be activated
  • Prior approval from Finnair is needed

Self-inflating life jacket

  • May be transported as checked baggage or carry-on baggage
  • Max. two small cylinders attached to the life jacket and max. two spare cylinders
  • Prior approval from Finnair is needed


  • May be transported as checked baggage or carry-on baggage
  • If you require any medication during the flight or at the airport, pack it in your carry-on baggage
  • Pack medicines in a separate bag, preferably in the original packaging
  • Take along the prescription and the doctor’s certificate; especially if your illness requires treatment with injectable medication
