Finnair is launching a suite of product upgrades and developing a mobile application as part of a larger drive to comprehensively renew the customer experience both on the ground and in the air.
On long-haul flights, product upgrades coming in the fall include the Economy Comfort package, a new offering in the front of the Economy Class cabin featuring at least four inches of extra legroom, comfy headrests, high-quality headphones and personal amenity kits. The Economy Class meal service is also being updated with an additional complimentary mid-flight snack on day-time flights, a new wine selection and complimentary sparkling wine.
Business Class will also soon include a new amenity kit with high-quality brand products. Throughout both Business and Economy, the inflight entertainment system is being redesigned with a fresher, more intuitive look and feel and a greater selection of movies, TV shows, newspapers, magazines and books.
On short-haul flights in Economy Class, Finnair will introduce Sky Bistro, a wider mix-and-match selection of seasonal, high-quality foods and beverages combining the best tastes of Europe and Asia. Meals can be tailored in advance at Finnair.com or bought on board during the flight.
Sky Bistro, which will be available on nearly all European flights, replaces the complimentary cold snack service that has been offered on some European flights lasting over two hours. On all flights in all classes, coffee and tea remain complimentary – as does Finnair’s signature refreshment, blueberry juice. In Business Class, meals remain inclusive in the ticket price.
Finnair’s mobile application, rolling out initially for Apple iOS devices in the fall and arriving on other mobile platforms later, is designed to be the customer’s companion throughout the journey, providing personalised, up-to-the-minute flight information and storing the customer’s mobile boarding passes. The app can be used to check in, select seats, purchase upgrades, receive relevant offers and check Finnair Plus point status.
“During the past year we have carried out detailed surveys of nearly 8,000 customers from our key markets in both Europe and Asia,” says Jarkko Konttinen, Finnair’s VP Marketing and Product Development. “With these product updates in tune with customer expectations and desires, we can support our core goal of growing Asian revenue and becoming a preferred airline in travel between Asia and Europe.”
Each of these product renewals will come online this autumn. Other product developments announced previously include new seats in Business Class that convert to fully flat beds on almost all long-haul aircraft, a sauna and new shower suites at the Finnair Lounge at Helsinki Airport, and the new Premium Lounge, an exclusive lounge annex for Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum members and other oneworld top tier customers only.
As the European launch customer of the next-generation Airbus A350 XWB (extra wide body) aircraft, Finnair has completed the cabin design of its new flagship long-haul product due to enter service next year. Created by the top Helsinki design firm dSign Vertti Kivi & Co, also the designer of Finnair’s new Premium Lounge at Helsinki Airport, the A350’s bright and spacious cabin features large panoramic view windows and comfortable seating arrangements both in Economy and Business Class. Gradual changes in the dynamic ambient LED lighting will ease customers into a relaxing flight experience and help create a calming and fresh atmosphere. All Finnair A350s will also be equipped with Wi-Fi for greater passenger enjoyment and connectivity.
“We have worked hard to create a special customer experience onboard the new A350 XWB aircraft and are proud to bring Finnish design to Finnair’s passengers,” says designer Vertti Kivi. “Our Space Alive concept means dynamic lighting, colours and moods to suit the time of day, destination or season. For example, when descending in the East the aircraft can be awash in warm orange tones, or surface interiors may glow in fresh blue hues when arriving in Helsinki.”
The Airbus A350 features an advanced pure air filtration system that changes the air in the cabin every two to three minutes. Draft-free air management, adjustable multiple temperature zones and a lower cabin pressure will also enhance the well-being of passengers and crew.
The 297-seat configuration includes 46 seats in Business Class in a 1+2+1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access to all Business Class passengers. The Zodiac Cirrus III seats convert to fully flat beds, while a 16-inch touch-screen inflight entertainment system comes programmed with films, TV shows, music and other digital content on demand in numerous languages. Seats in Business Class also come equipped with AC and USB power outlets.
The Economy Class cabin features comfortable Zodiac Z300 slim-line seats with a 31-inch seat pitch in a 3+3+3 layout. At the front of the Economy Class cabin there are 43 Economy Comfort seats with comfier headrests, high-quality headphones and four extra inches of legroom. All Economy Class seats include an 11-inch touch screen inflight entertainment system and a USB power outlet.
“Since Finnair’s founding in 1923, we have had a long history of operations using the most advanced aircraft available,” says Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo. “As the first European operator of the A350 we are proud to carry forward this tradition on behalf of our passengers, whose safety and comfort remain our first priority.”
Finnair plans to begin operating its first A350s in the second half of next year, initially serving Shanghai, Bangkok and Beijing, with Hong Kong and Singapore A350 service to be added in 2016. Finnair has 11 firm orders and 8 options for A350 aircraft, which will form the backbone of the company’s long-haul fleet and drive expansion plans.
The eco-smart design of the A350 also brings more than 25 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and operating cost over the previous generation of aircraft in its class, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of Finnair and its passengers.
Finnair announces ten new scheduled routes to popular destinations for summer 2015 in cooperation with Suntours and other tour operators. Finnair and Suntours will work closely together to ensure the best combination of travel packages and flight-only reservations to every destination. Flight-only purchases can be made either via Finnair’s website or through the travel agencies.
The new scheduled routes are operated up to six
times a week to:
Paphos, Cyprus starting 31 March;
Palma de Mallorca, Spain starting 11 April;
Dalaman, Turkey starting 12 April 2015;
Heraklion, Crete (Greece) starting 17 April;
Chania, Crete (Greece) starting 18 April;
Rhodes, Greece starting 19 April;
Catania, Sicily (Italy) starting 6 May;
Kos, Greece starting 9 May;
Naples, Italy starting 28 May;
Innsbruck, Austria starting 14 June.
The routes will give Finnair and Suntours customers better and more frequent flight options to the most popular sun destinations. To match customer preferences Finnair will fly less often to Antalya in Turkey and will instead add more flights to Alanya (Gazipasa) in summer 2015. Flights to all above-mentioned destinations can already be booked on Finnair’s website.
Finnair has been named Northern Europe’s Best Airline at the World Airline Awards, repeating the honour for the fifth straight time since 2010. The awards, organised by Skytrax and held this year at the Farnborough Air Show, are based on an independent survey of some 18 million travellers from more than 160 countries, and are considered the most prestigious and respected awards in the airline industry. The oneworld alliance has also been named the World’s Best Airline Alliance for the second year running.
“We recognise how tough the competition can be, not only in our home region but in the numerous Asian markets we serve as well,” says Gregory Kaldahl, Finnair’s SVP Resource Management, who was on hand at Farnborough to collect the award. “It is very gratifying to receive this kind of recognition for our employees’ commitment to the needs of customers and the continued development of our product both on the ground and in the air.”
Finnair has nearly completed its program, begun late last year, to equip its long-haul fleet with seats that convert to fully flat beds in Business Class on nine routes. Inflight entertainment has also recently been upgraded for passengers in both classes, and custom Marimekko for Finnair tableware, textiles and other amenities are provided in both cabins. New lounge services opening in August at Helsinki Airport as well as additions to Finnair’s long-haul fleet in 2015 will take passenger comfort and environmental performance to the next level.
Finnair remains the only airline in the Nordic countries with a four-star Skytrax rating.
This summer we’ll start operating direct scheduled flights to Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Kazan in Russia.
Flights to Nizhny Novgorod (airport code GOJ) begin 25 July, while flights to Samara (KUF) start on 7 August and to Kazan (KZN) on 18 August. The flights will be operated by Flybe Finland three times a week with Embraer E90 aircraft.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the biggest cities in Russia and a growing IT hub. Samara is an industrial hub of southern Russia with 1.1 million inhabitants. Kazan is the multi-ethnical capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and the world’s centre of the Tatar Muslim culture.
In addition to these new destinations we also fly twice a day to St. Petersburg, 9 times a week to Moscow (Sheremetyevo) and four times a week to Yekaterinburg. Together with our oneworld partner S7 Airlines we also offer codeshare connections to Moscow (Domodedovo) and onward to Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Ufa and Yekaterinburg.
Skytrax, an international research company for the air transport industry, has renewed Finnair’s 4-star rating based on a product audit conducted as part of the World Airline Star Rating program. A comprehensive audit was carried out on 18 flights in February, during which the auditors carefully examined hundreds of elements of the service and product at airports and onboard. Since 2009 Finnair has been the only Nordic airline with a 4-star Skytrax rating. The 4-star airline rating is presently awarded to 35 airlines around the world.

Together with Finavia, Finnair will install 10 self-service bag drop units for Finnair customers in the departure hall of Terminal 2 at Helsinki Airport by the end of May. Self-service bag drop units will also be introduced at Oulu and Turku airports later this year.
The self-service bag drop units allow customers to tag and drop their checked baggage without assistance, provided that they have checked in online or at a self-service check-in kiosk. The baggage tag is printed at the self-service check-in kiosk. The bag is then placed on the belt at the self-service bag drop unit, where the passenger scans the bag tag using a hand held scanner. The bag is then ready to go.
“Those of our customers who require assistance will still receive personal service from our baggage drop counters and departure hall personnel. Normal bag drop counters will remain in use alongside the self-service bag drop units,” adds Johanna Bagge, Director of Helsinki Airport Customer Service.
The impressive new ferris wheel that has risen above the Helsinki shore skyline has been named Finnair Sky Wheel. The 40-meter ferris wheel, built upon the Katajanokka pier in time for the 1st of May, is equipped with 30 air-conditioned blue and white gondolas that will take passengers for a ride every day from noon to midnight. Passengers can also choose to ride the Finnair Sky Wheel in a VIP-gondola with glass floors and leather seating. The €195 price includes Veuve Clicquot champagne.
”Finnair is happy to be first in being a part of giving thousands of passengers the chance to experience a scenic tour above the rooftops of Helsinki. The ferris wheel is a prominent and internationally notable Helsinki landmark that includes an aviation element. This is why we as an airline wish to be seen with it,” says Finnair’s marketing director Jarkko Konttinen.
On 8 June Finnair will organise an event where all Finnair Plus members may ride the ferris wheel for free between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Finnair Plus members will also receive a 25% discount on the entry fee at all other times (does not apply to the VIP-gondola), leaving the cost of the ticket at €9 (normally €12).
From 9 April 2014 onward passengers on Finnair flights are allowed to use handheld devices, such as smartphones, tablets and e-readers, also during take-offs and landings as long as the devices are kept in flight mode. The approval came from the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).
Passengers may still be asked to switch off their devices if the visibility conditions are low during landing. Laptop computers are not considered handheld devices, and must always be switched off and stored properly during take-off and landing.
“Since the European Aviation Safety Agency recently eased its regulations concerning the operation of portable electronic devices, we have sought to apply these regulations to policies on board Finnair flights. Now with the necessary approvals in place, we are able to do so,” says Antti Aukia, Finnair’s VP Safety and Quality Management.
The new partner will add 28 transatlantic routes to the joint business, including new non-stop services between 18 European destinations and the United States. US Airways will be an affiliate member in the joint business until it fully integrates operations with American Airlines as a part of their merger to create the largest airline in the world.
The joint business hub airports include New York’s JFK, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Heathrow, Madrid, Helsinki, Phoenix, Charlotte and Philadelphia. Thanks to the joint business, dozens of cities in North America from Vancouver to Charlotte are only a one-stop itinerary away from Helsinki.
The joint business was established by American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia in October 2010, and Finnair joined it in 2013.
In the upcoming winter season 2014–2015, Finnair will introduce scheduled services to Krabi and Phuket in Thailand. Both of these destinations were previously served only on a charter basis. Flights to Phuket (HKT) will be operated three times a week from 14 November, and to Krabi (KBV) twice a week from 10 December. Both routes will be operated with Airbus A340 aircraft.
The number of weekly flights to Nagoya, Japan (NGO) will also increase from four to five per week. The additional frequency is scheduled to depart on Tuesdays in November–December and Wednesdays from January to March. All Finnair flights to Nagoya are operated with Airbus A330 aircraft with full-flat seats in Business Class.
Additionally, we’ll reopen our service to Tromsø (TOS). The Arctic city in the far north of Norway will be served from Helsinki three times a week from 1 January until 28 March 2015. The route will be operated by Flybe Finland with Embraer E90 aircraft.
It has been 90 years since Finnair’s first commercial flight. On March 20, 1924, a Junkers F13 D-335 seaplane transported 162 kilogrammes of mail from Katajanokka in Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia. The founding documents of the company, then known as Aero Oy, had been signed on November 1 the previous year.
Nine decades later, Finnair operates 43 aircraft to more than 60 destinations around the world, employing nearly six thousand people. Last year, the company transported 9.3 million passengers, which represents 60 per cent of all passengers that passed through Helsinki Airport. Air traffic plays a central role in Finnish business and the national economy, directly and indirectly employing over 120,000 people in Finland.
The world’s sixth-oldest airline still in operation celebrates the 90th anniversary of its maiden flight at work. Today, Finnair has six daily flights on weekdays between Helsinki and Tallinn operated by Flybe.
“Our operations have expanded substantially since our modest beginnings. Over time, we have also increased cooperation with partners such as Flybe. Finnair has become a network airline known to all Finns, with operations recognised as world-class,” says Finnair’s Chief Operating Officer Ville Iho.

From 20 March onwards, all Finnair flights to and from St. Petersburg will be transferred to the new Terminal 1. Previously Finnair flights have been operated through Terminal 2.
We’re installing new full-flat seats to most of our long-haul aircraft during 2014. From 1 April the new seats will be in use on aircraft flying to Tokyo and New York, and from 1 May also on flights to Beijing and Seoul. As of 1 June the full-flat seats will also be available on flights to Hanoi, Hong Kong, Nagoya, Osaka and Shanghai. The new seats are a result of our 29 million-euro programme to retrofit most of our wide-body fleet of Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft.
The Zodiac Seats UK Vantage model seats that are already in use on our four newest Airbus A330s are designed to provide a fully flat bed of up to 200 cm (79”), while shoulder room measures 58 cm (23”). The fully adjustable seats also come with an individual reading light, adjustable headrest, mood lights and a range of inflight entertainment options.
After the full-flat retrofit program is complete, all of our long-haul Airbus fleet will have full-flat seats in Business Class with the exception of three older aircraft. Due to maintenance or other technical reasons, designated full-flat routes may still be served by these older aircraft, which feature angled lie-flat seating in Business Class.
SriLankan Airlines will join the oneworld alliance on 1 May. With this new partnership, Finnair Plus members can collect points from flights with SriLankan Airlines, as well as enjoy other oneworld benefits with the new partner.
SriLankan Airlines has a network of 32 destinations in 20 countries across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The Colombo-based carrier’s addition will bring two new destinations to the oneworld network – Sri Lanka’s new Hambantota International (HRI) and India’s Tiruchirapalli (TRZ).
SriLankan Airlines is the first airline from the Indian subcontinent to enter any global alliance.
Next December Finnair will supplement its double-daily winter service to Bangkok with three additional frequencies per week from 30 December 2014 to 27 March 2015. The extra flights bring the number of Finnair’s peak-season weekly Bangkok services to 17, the most frequencies of any European carrier.
The additional flights are scheduled to depart on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. AY091 departs from Helsinki Airport (HEL) at 20:15 for arrival at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) at 11:00 local time the next day. AY092 leaves Bangkok on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 12:45 for arrival in Helsinki at 18:55 local time. The new evening frequencies, operated with Airbus A340 aircraft in a two-class Business and Economy configuration, offer excellent connections with other cities in Finland, Scandinavia, France and Germany. Together with the daily Bangkok flights AY089 (departure at 16:40) and AY095 (18:30), the three extra flights constitute an intensive traffic program giving passengers a wide range of choices and connectivity throughout Finnair’s network.
“Thailand has long been a popular destination for Finns and other Northern Europeans, and adding capacity will help us meet this enduring – and growing – demand,” says Finnair’s CEO Pekka Vauramo. “As the European airline with most weekly frequencies to Bangkok and several other Asian destinations, we are on track to double our revenue from Asian traffic between 2010 and 2020.”
Finnair offers up to 28 frequencies per week to three cities in Japan and 28 to five cities in China. Delhi, Hanoi, Seoul and Singapore round out Finnair’s other Asian destinations that seamlessly connect to a network of more than 50 destinations in Europe via Helsinki.
Next winter we will open a new direct route between Helsinki and Miami, Florida. The new seasonal service will be operated three times a week with an Airbus A340 aircraft. Flights will start 16 December 2014 with two weekly frequencies on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The third weekly frequency will be operated on Saturdays from 3 January 2015 onward. All three weekly flights will continue until 21 March 2015.
AY007 will leave Helsinki (HEL) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 09:55 and arrive in Miami (MIA) at 14:05 local time. AY008 departs Miami at 16:00 and arrives in Helsinki at 08:50 local time the next day. The flight from Helsinki to Miami lasts approximately 11 hours while the return journey takes less than 10 hours. The timetable connects well with passengers transferring from other cities in Finland, Estonia and Sweden.
“Services to Miami with codeshare partners have always been popular, and the time is now right to offer a direct non-stop route in the winter season in addition to these services,” says Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo. “Finns love Miami and southern Florida, and there is a sizeable Finnish expatriate community in the region. At the same time, this new direct route also gives us the opportunity to develop Finland and Lapland as exotic winter tourism destinations for Americans.”
The route between Helsinki and Miami International Airport will be included in the joint business on transatlantic traffic with the oneworld alliance partners American Airlines, British Airways and Iberia. This gives customers the possibility to mix and match flights on the different carriers for the best pricing and scheduling. For example, an itinerary could include a non-stop flight to Miami in one direction, but a connecting flight through New York, Madrid or London in the other, if the timing is more convenient. Finnair’s cooperation with the three other carriers also means that Miami is yet another gateway to dozens of North American destinations.
Miami, with a population of over 400,000 in a metropolitan area of more than 5 million, is at the centre of the largest urban area in the south-eastern United States. The region is famous for its beaches and leisure activities, as well as its top-tier entertainment, sporting and cultural attractions. Miami is also a major commercial and financial centre in the United States and widely seen as an economic and cultural gateway between North and South America.Book now
Mobile boarding passes can now be opened also in the Passbook application, available for iPhone and iPod touch devices that have iOS6 or newer.
Mobile boarding passes are in use at most Finnair airports. Passengers can send a mobile boarding pass to themselves in online or mobile check-in. A link to the mobile boarding pass will also be sent via automatic check-in, if the use of mobile boarding pass is permitted at the departure airport.
The link to a mobile boarding pass is sent via SMS or email. If the phone has Passbook, the link automatically opens the mobile boarding pass in the application where it can be saved. If the boarding pass information is updated later (changes in gate or seat, for example), it will not automatically show in Passbook. Instead, the mobile boarding pass needs to be reopened using the original link in order to show the latest information.
The mobile boarding pass can only be opened or saved in Passbook when the device is connected to the internet. After being saved, the mobile boarding pass can be opened whenever and wherever needed without internet connection.
Finnair and its fellow oneworld alliance members Japan Airlines and British Airways are now selling joint fares between Europe and Japan for travel starting 1 April 2014. For customers this means more flexible routing options and the possibility to mix and match flights on all three carriers for the most convenient scheduling and best pricing.
Currently, Finnair flies from Helsinki to Tokyo every day, and to Osaka and Nagoya five times per week, connecting Japan to more than 50 Finnair destinations in Europe. During summer, also the routes to Osaka and Nagoya will be operated daily.
Both Japan Airlines and British Airways are increasing their scheduled services between Japan and Europe this summer, as well as improving the flight timings. From May, with two additional weekly services British Airways will fly twice a day to Tokyo with daily flights to both Haneda and Narita airports. Japan Airlines will also launch new daytime nonstop flights between Haneda and London on 30 March 2014.
Carried out over the Christmas and New Year period, the 18th Change for Good collection for UNICEF on Finnair’s international flights once again lead to a heartening result.
During the six-week long campaign period, Finnair’s customers donated a total of 55,490.93 euros in the special envelopes placed in aircraft seat pockets and collection boxes at Helsinki Airport. Additionally, Finnair Plus customers donated more than 2 million Finnair Plus points to UNICEF. “Warm thanks to all our customers who have once again given their support to our traditional Change for Good collection,” says Arja Suominen, SVP Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility. “I also want to thank our employees and partners who have participated in the collection. The campaign targeted the UNICEF Schools for Asia program. We believe that education is the foundation of a better future."
UNICEF's Schools for Asia campaign supports children's schooling in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, East Timor, India, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam. The campaign aims to provide children with qualified teachers, safe and clean school facilities, and well-designed curricula that include life-skills education in health, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation and HIV prevention. In order to achieve permanent and positive change, UNICEF works together with local authorities and village communities.
Finnair Plus loyalty customers can donate their points to UNICEF throughout the year. All spare coins can also always be dropped off at any of the permanent collection boxes around Helsinki Airport.
Since 1994 Finnair and its customers have donated over 1.2 million euros to UNICEF.
Finnair and the biggest tour operators in Lapland have agreed a three-year cooperation arrangement for flights to Lapland as well as cooperation in marketing. Finnair will significantly add to its Lapland flight schedule in November 2014 with the start of the winter traffic season.
The number of flights especially from Helsinki to Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo will increase. Timetables have been drawn up to provide good connections on the routes between Lapland and destinations in Europe and Asia via Helsinki.
"The demand for traffic to northern Finland comes with the growth in tourism, and by offering more flights we want to offer the possibility to experience the magic of Finnish Lapland for both Finnish and international passengers," says Rolf Backman, responsible for Finnair's domestic sales. "Asian tourists represent a growing travel category and they have expressed an interest in the Northern Lights, for instance, as well as other Lapland experiences."
"We have been in regular conversation with local tour operators and together we've been trying to find solutions, with the help of which we can develop Lapland as a travel destination," Backman continues. "Cooperation helps us to optimize our traffic for the operating benefit of customers in Finland and those from elsewhere as well as for the whole travel chain. With the help of strong cooperation within that travel chain we can achieve even better sales of Finland as an interesting travel destination."

US Airways will join oneworld® as of 31 March 2014, following completion of its merger with alliance founding member American Airlines.
All its regional affiliates, operating under the US Airways Express brand, will also transition to oneworld at the same time.
US Airways will add 60 destinations to the oneworld map – most in the United States but also three in Canada and one in Mexico. The key hubs of US Airways are Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Washington DC’s Reagan National, expanding oneworld’s presence across the United States.
Until the full integration of American Airlines and US Airways, which will see the combined airline retaining the American Airlines name, US Airways and its regional carriers will operate as oneworld affiliate members under the American Airlines umbrella. They will offer oneworld’s full range of services and benefits – although some may be phased in shortly after US Airways joins. US Airways, American Airlines and their oneworld partners are working to provide the most popular benefits and services on an accelerated timeline.
The 140 million members of established oneworld airlines’ frequent flyer programs, including Finnair Plus, will also receive alliance services and benefits when flying on US Airways from 31March. From day one this will include the ability to earn mileage and tier status points and, for Emerald and Sapphire cardholders, to access US Airways’ lounges when flying on oneworld departures, although the ability to redeem rewards for flights on US Airways may be phased in shortly afterwards.
US Airways’ network will also be covered by oneworld’s range of alliance fares – the most extensive offered by any of the global alliances.
The addition of US Airways represents the latest landmark in oneworld’s biggest membership expansion yet. Other elements include the forthcoming transition into oneworld by SriLankan Airlines and Brazil’s TAM. With the addition of these airlines, the oneworld network will expand to almost a thousand destinations in more than 150 countries, served by over 14,000 daily departures – equivalent to a oneworld flight taking off or landing every three seconds around the clock – carrying 475 million passengers last year and generating annual revenues of US$ 140 billion.
